I was always in love with letters
അക്ഷരങ്ങൾ എന്നും ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു
Moments with Calligrapher Narayana Bhattathiri.
The documentary
Calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing, is usually associated with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and English. Narayana Bhattathiri, from the coastal state of Kerala in India, has devoted his life to blending calligraphy into the script of his mother tongue, Malayalam. Through his efforts, spanning more than 40 years, he has explored and elevated the visual aesthetics of the Malayalam script. His calligraphic illustrations seamlessly blend the meaning of the text into the visuals, thus enabling a non-speaker of the language to be enticed by the letters. Maybe the viewer may begin his journey into the language through his letters.
This documentary is a journey with Narayana Bhattathiri, tracing his first steps in the art and continuing to the present day.
